fall의 활용법 8가지

fall in love: 사랑에 빠지다.
fall in line: 규정에 따르다, 협조하다.
fall for: ~에 빠지다, 속다
fall behind: 뒤처지다, 늦어지다
fall back on: ~에 기대다/의지하다.
fall out: 사이가 안 좋아지다.
fall through: 무산되다.
fall apart: 무너져 내리다.
fall short: 부족하다.

1-1. fall in love: 사랑에 빠지다.
    I instantly fell in love with the city. 나는 즉시 그 도시와 사랑에 빠졌어.
    
1-2. fall in line: 규정/관례에 따르다, 협조하다.
    *캠브릿지 사전: to follow the rules and behave according to expected standards of behavior.
    
    If they're on board, the rest will fall in line. 그들만 동참하면 나머지는 알아서 협조해줄 거야.
      * on board: (마치 같이 비행기에 탄 것처럼) 동의하는/동참하는
      * 캠브릿지 사전: as part of a group or team, especially for a special purpose.    
    - Cathy's not on board yet. 아직 Cathy의 동의를 구하지 못했어.
    - Then get her on board. 그럼 어서 설득해.

    We shouldn't worry about what the rest of the world thinks, because once we act, everyone will fall in line.
    세상 사람들이 어떻게 생각하는지는 걱정할 필요 없어요. 일단 우리가 행동으로 옮기면 다들 협조해줄거니까요.
    
2. fall for ~: ~에 빠지다/속다
    * 캠브릿지 사전: to be tricked into believing something that is not true.
    
    You fall for it every time! 넌 매번 속는구나!
    Don't fall for that. 그 말에 속지 마
    
3. fall behind: (특히 일정, 진도, payment 등이) 뒤처지다/늦어지다.
    *캠브릿지 사전: to fail to do something fast enough or on time.
    
    We're falling behind. 우린 뒤처지고 있다고요.
    
    We can't afford to fall behind.
    *can't afford to: ~할 여유/여력이 없어.
    
     - You can also use the summer to catch up if you fall behind.
    
    <구체적으로 뭐가 뒤처진 건지>
    He might fall behind on his rent.

4. fall back on: ~에 기대다/의지하다 (비빌언덕/저축/차선책/Plan B)
    *캠브릿지 사전: to use something, especially a form of financial support, when other things have failed.

    At least, I have something to fall back on. 최소한 나는 의지할 대상이 있다.
    
    I thought I was gonna be a dancer.
    But I took my parents' advice and I went to UCSD, so I would have "something to fall back on."
    
    Do you have savings to fall back on? 의지할 수 있는 저축 좀 있어?
    
    Lucky you had a plan B to fall back on.
    
    I didn't have anything to fall back on.
    There wasn't a safety net.
    
5. fall out: 떨어져 나가다, (싸워서 더이상 얘기를 안할 때) 사이가 안 좋다.
    *캠브릿지 사전: to argue with someone and stop being friendly with them.
    
    We had a falling out. 싸워서 얘기 안해/사이가 안 좋아졌어.
    
    She and I don't talk. We had a falling out.
    
    They had a falling out years ago.
    
6. fall through: 완료/실현되지 못하다, 무산되다
    *캠브릿지 사전: to fail to happen
    
    My plan fell through. 내 계획은 무산되었다.

    I hope you don't mind my being here.
    My Pilates fell through.
    
    <애들을 봐주기로 했던 분이 못 와서 참석 못할 때>
    You  guys are in, right?
    We wanted to, but our sitter just fell through.

    *It's my understanding that ~ : 제가 알고 있는 바로는/이해한 바로는 ~입니다.

    이런건 주로 일반적으로 짜여진 각본에 맞추 진행되는 걸로 전 알고/이해하고 있어요.
    
7. fall apart: 무너져 내리다.
    *캠브릿지 사전: to break into pieces.
    
    My marriage is falling apart. 내 결혼생활이 산산이 조각나고 있어.
    
    I am falling apart. (감정적으로) 산산이 조작나고 있어. 힘들어.
    
    After she died, I felt like my whole world fell apart.
    그녀가 세상을 뜨고, 세상이 다 무너지는 것 같았어.
    
    Everything is falling apart.
    다 걷잡을 수 없이 엉망 진창이야.
    
8. fall short: 부족하다, 미치지 못하다
    *캠브릿지 사전: to fail to reach an amount or standard that was expected or hoped for, causing disappointment.
    
    Here's where we fell short. 이 부분이 우리가 부족했던 부분입니다.
    
    They didn't have the best customer service, and that's where they fell short.
